Southeastern participates in Professional Development Program Press Release Date: 6-22-2011 Dr. James Honan leads a discussion during Tuesday’s professional development program. DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma State University is continuing its efforts to meet the ever-changing challenges in higher education. One method in which to achieve this is by providing employees with innovative professional development opportunities. On Tuesday, a broad-based group of some 70 Southeastern administrators, faculty, staff, and students participated in a Harvard University Professional Development program at the new Donald W. Reynolds Community Center & Library in Durant. Dr. James Honan, Senior Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, served as facilitator. “The key objective of this program is to accelerate a professional and organizational transformation that really began at the University in 2009,” said Southeastern president Larry Minks. “This will provide new perspectives and will develop skills critical to the future success of Southeastern faculty and staff. In addition, the program will assist the University in responding to a rapidly-changing environment and in leading organizational change and development initiatives.” Tuesday’s session included a case study on Southeastern Organization Structure Redesign and Transformation, and small and large group discussions. Dr. Honan’s teaching and research interests include financial management of nonprofit organizations, organizational performance measurement and management, and higher-education administration. At Harvard, he is educational co-chair of the Institute for Educational Management (IEM) and is a faculty member in a number of executive education programs for educational leaders and nonprofit administrators. He has served as a consultant on strategic planning, resource allocation, and performance measurement and management to numerous colleges, universities, schools, and nonprofit organizations, both nationally and internationally. Previously, he served as institutional research coordinator in the Office of Budgets at Harvard and as a project analyst in the Harvard University Financial Aid Office. Dr. Honan has also been a research assistant at the Educational Resources Information Center Clearinghouse on Higher Education in Washington, D.C., and has served as executive assistant to the president of Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Tuesday’s professional development program was provided by external donor funding. Follow-up sessions will be held on campus in Aug. or September as well as in November with a number of facilitators from Harvard. In addition, over the past two years, a number of Southeastern faculty and staff members have attended sessions at Harvard on Management Development, Program, Institute for Management & Leadership in Education, Institute for Educational Management, and Crisis Leadership in Higher Education. Once again, funding for these unique programs was made possible by donor sources.
